Which certificate do I need?

Answer two or three questions. The slip tells you which document you need, why, what happens on the visit, and writes the message to send.

The certificate you need appears here.

Choose who it's for on the left. Landlords, sellers, new kitchens and faults each need something different.

A guide to the rules in England, not legal advice. Ring if you're not sure.

The three documents, side by side

EICRElectrical Installation Condition Report
Checks wiring that's already there. Landlords in England need one at least every five years; homeowners usually every ten, and on moving in.
EICElectrical Installation Certificate
Issued for new work: a new circuit, a new fuse board, a rewire. Kept with the house deeds and asked for when you sell.
MEIWCMinor Works certificate
For small additions or changes to an existing circuit, like an extra socket or a moved light.

Codes on a report

  • C1Danger present. Made safe straight away.
  • C2Potentially dangerous. Needs putting right.
  • FIFurther investigation. Needs looking into.
  • C3Improvement recommended. Not a fail.

Good to know

01I'm a landlord. Do I need an EICR?

In England, private landlords must have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every five years, give a copy of the report to tenants (and to new tenants before they move in), and give it to the council within seven days if asked. Use the certificate checker or ring to book one.

02What's the difference between an EICR and an electrical installation certificate?

An EICR reports on the condition of wiring that is already there. An Electrical Installation Certificate is issued for new work, such as a new circuit or a new consumer unit. Small additions to an existing circuit get a Minor Works certificate.

03How much does a report or a repair cost?

It depends on the size of the property and the job, so ring or text for a quote. Reviewers describe the prices as affordable and very reasonable.

04Can you come at short notice?

Ring and ask. Reviewers mention prompt replies, quick booking and a job taken on at short notice, but it depends on what is already booked.

Still not sure which one? Ring and ask.

Reviewers mention quick replies and easy booking. Call or text, or send the details of the job first.
